Proof is in the Pudding (a little food humor) …. Meet Janice, 2015 Participant Hi everyone:  I wanted to say a little bit about R.E.A.L. and my experience with the program.  First I want to express how great Selina and Billy are, and how sincerely concerned they are about the people in their program.  Their personal interest in my success was motivating.  They stuck with me even while I processed some tough stuff, they never let me down, right there for me everyday.  I felt better about myself and became hopeful, something I have struggled with for 10 years.  I never got that hands on interest from a food program, a diet or a doctor, nor a trainer at a gym.  I’ve been through all of those programs.  My problem was I was “stuck”.  I lost control of my life over time, being depressed and discouraged over lost jobs,bad jobs and bosses.  Then my parents became ill and I left my self behind to take care of their needs.  I had acquired knowledge about food and health and had always exercised and been active in the past, but nothing I was trying was working, I was thankful that I had at least stopped gaining, even if I could not lose weight.  I was so excited to learn about the program, that it offered the same ideas that I already believed in but couldn’t get to work for me.  REAL helped me identify my blocks, really recognize and admit to the problems.  I realized where and why I had gotten off track and with help and suggestions found a path back to more healthy living.   I had a chance to look  and find where I could change and make healthier choices.  Making my “goals” a priority and making conscious choices to make the changes was big for me, not letting habits control me.  Changing my focus, changing my thoughts, I began to experience positive expectation.  With the new view can a new outlook.  I took a good look at my negative self judgement and realized it was keeping me from enjoying life.  With this shift to taking responsibility for my self and taking control of my life again, some stress started melting away, and so have the unwanted pounds, the acid reflux, and the high blood pressure.  It is a journey, but I know I am well on my way and excited about what’s coming for me next health wise, weight wise and in all of...

Creating Health and Happiness in the simple task of Packing your Lunch

With statistics stating 60% of the population purchase a commercially prepared lunch at least once per week and 1/4 of those people go on to repeat that 4 more times in the week, it is not difficult to see why individuals who struggle with weight can’t get ahead.   Instead of seeking out the latest supplement, drink or way in which you can drop the unwanted pounds, take control and take the time today to pack your own lunch. Yes, it is that simple.  Pack your own lunch. When you start your wellness journey with breakfast and sustain it with lunch, day by day you will improve your journey along The WAY!  There are a few things you should consider when planning this new strategy for weight management and even loss. MAKE TIME, TAKE TIME If you desire change, you must commit to it atleast part of the way.  So if you find yourself in the store, searching the isle for prepackaged lunch items, do yourself a favor and go back to buying your “healthy lunch” at the local diner.  It isn’t about “fitting it in”, it has to be about “getting it in.”  Grocery day is a great time to set aside not only for putting groceries away but preparing and packing the snacks, fruits or veggies for the week.  Wash your fruits and veggies and then cut them up immediately.  In the end taking time will save you the time later. GET YOUR VEGGIES  If you are paying attention to the media surrounding healthy choices, the biggest statement out there right now is the fact that we aren’t getting enough fruits and veggies.  Get a little more by adding cucumber, green peppers, olives, lettuce, tomato or other favorites to your turkey sandwich instead of dressings for flavor.  Open up the spice cupboard and sprinkle added flavor, leaving the dressings behind.  Added flavor and added health with a little bit more planning with go a long WAY. MAKE A LITTLE MORE If you have begun to take our advice and cook more dinners at home, plan to cook a little more or skip the left overs for tomorrow.  Instead of “finishing up” what’s left, pack it for tomorrow.  Add a piece of fruit or some veggies with a fruit based dip and enjoy a healthy meal tomorrow.  Pack it tonight so that the only thing you have to do on the way out the door is open the fridge.  Time saved, money saved, health saved!  Win! Win! PLAN FOR SUCCESS Meal planning applies to all meals of the day, not just dinner.  When considering your week, combine your work into other meals.  Salsa chicken at night can lead to a delicious and healthy breakfast combo.  When selecting your meal choices for dinner, look at the week and consider where the left overs will help reduce the stress of a bus-y-ness. GO LEAN Not low fat, but lean.  Choose leaner lunch meats if that is your choice.  Wrap it in lettuce instead of bread or choose a dense grain bread.  Make a sandwich out of yesterdays meatloaf or create a healthy chicken salad with fruit and nuts dressed on lettuce or grains.  Experiment but always have a back up so that you don’t ditch a bad lunch choice for no lunch at all. FRESHEN UP YOUR WATER, LEAVE THE DIET DRINK BEHIND Flavor, everyone wants flavor.  Washing down your food with a diet soda will counter all of your efforts so skip it!  Choose instead a fresh slice of orange in a tall glass of water, an infuser for fruit flavor or a tall green tea.  Consider the calories in your choice of drinks and be certain that you aren’t countering all of your efforts. COMMIT TO YOURSELF Making the decision to commit to a timeframe of at least two weeks for planning, packing and following through.  Instead of seeking success on the scale, feel it in how your clothes fit.  This will be the best judge of your choices. I continue to be excited about celebrating a recent inspirational success of one of our clients.  She has achieved several goals in the last 10 months and continues on; dropping from a size 32 to a size 22 jean!  No shakes, no supplements, no crazy diets or burpees … simply by making better choices than she had been when we met her along The WAY to Healthy Living. How, you might wonder.  Well it wasn’t all exercise, in fact she works out twice per week.  This alone provided the inspiration for today’s topic. Magic Number 15! Only 15% of efforts that lead to weight loss success are attributed to exercise. 15 is an average number of pounds people desire to lose. 15 extra miles per day on average added to your walking routine can result in 3 pounds of weight loss per week. When we met her, 15 is the number of meals that this young lady purchased out Monday through Friday. So what’s the magic about it?   It is a small investment to devote to yourself in the entirety of a day.  When made, it provides results.  The other 945 minutes can be spent doing what you have always done minus the change. 15, begin today.  Start with one, commit to doing it every day.  Try it on for a few weeks and then come back for another. 15 Minutes of exercise can make the difference. 15 Minutes of meditation for solidarity and clarity will change your attitude. 15 Minutes spent in the morning preparing breakfast and packing your lunch. 15 Minutes of additional walking. 15 Minutes to prepare a meal. 15 Minutes spent doing something you enjoy. 15 Minutes of laughter a day. 15 Minutes of buffer between appointments. 15 Minutes less of TV or Computer time. 15 Minutes less of sitting. 15 Minutes less of negative talking.
