5 Smart Ways to Shop for a Weight Loss Program

As the medical community becomes a big player in the reported   $50 Billion Dollar Weight Loss industry,  individuals are more confused than ever where to turn to when seeking out a weight loss solution.  Regardless of the almost  $30 Billion Dollar increase since 2012, the success rates don’t seem to be getting any better. Take into account the consistent reporting through the years that only 5% of individuals actually maintain success and even more astonishing recent research showing that the same may hold true for those that put their health at risk with  surgical interventions, one might begin to wonder if it isn’t a losing battle. Without before and after images that distort the truth, without a miracle cure to your problems and most importantly without asking you to endure months of rigorous exercise, I would like to share 5 Smart Ways to Shop for a Weight Loss Program. First let’s be clear. For almost a decade and a half I struggled with weight, at one point in my life weighing a whopping 248# For approximately the last decade, I have become one of the 5% that has been able to maintain success I am not exactly where I want to be; but it is by choice, I am healthy, and I continue to work at healthy living every day I haven’t found the secret, but I have found the solution and share it with others as a Wellness Coach There is no shortcut, no secret and definitely no magic pill, it begins with YOU and what YOU ARE WILLING TO DO  If you want success, finding what is right for you is a bit of a process.  So let’s begin. Investigate the results Remember, weight loss is a big dollar business so everyone is competing to entice you with the most amazing results you have ever seen.  Don’t be blinded by eagerness for great loss, in reality order to work it most likely will require work from you.  SEO and Internet companies are paid to push the information to the top of the search so be certain to look beyond the initial results in Google for your answers.  At times the best places to go are consumer reports, lawsuit searches and bloggers who want to share the truth about their misconceptions. Make sure you are ready for the Investment Do you really know what you have gotten yourself into and more importantly what will be needed to maintain the end result?  Are you ready for the commitment?  It isn’t just about finances.  It is a time investment.  The last thing you want to do when embarking on a weight loss journey is to set yourself up to feed the negative emotions that brought you to the decision for change.  Be fully informed, financially, physically and mentally for the undertaking.  Instead of asking, “How much weight can I lose?”, ask “What will it take to keep it off?”  There is nothing worse than remembering a success you once had and then returning to the “fat clothes” you kept just in case.  (by the way, if they are too big, throw them out.  If done right, you shouldn’t need them again anyway 😉 Understand the commitment in comparison to the reality of your life schedule The latest programs are offering results in as little as 21 days.  Seems simple enough right?  Before you sign on, take the time to really examine your calendar, your work schedule, your family calendar and identify any obstacles to being able to commit 100% to the program.  After all the assumption is that you want the amazing results in the photo, correct?  Most programs that delineate activity and restrictions require just that and more to get those results. Create realistic expectations Once you have done the first three steps, it is a good time to “get real” with yourself.  What are you willing to commit to, what is going to be an obstacle for you and what are you actually expecting to get out of the program?  If you are only looking for weight loss numbers,...

5 Ways to Make Halloween Healthy

5 Ways to Make Halloween Healthy

Traditions can be changed and Halloween CAN BE THE START TO A NEW YEAR FOR YOU with 5 ways to make Halloween Healthy! Happy Halloween and WELCOME to the BEGINNING of the Holidays that CHALLENGE each and everyone of us to maintain our summer figure through the winter months! January DOESN’T have to be a month of resolutions, it CAN BE a month of celebrating RESULTS!  BUT you MUST begin today. Give Generously Do you hold back thinking that you are going to have more kids than you did last year?  Really?  How long have you lived in your neighborhood?  Or is holding back, holding onto hope that you will have just a “few” left over?  Give and give generously.  If you think that you can have it in the house and NOT eat it like you used to, who are you kidding?! Better to run out with smiles and satisfaction of seeing all the cute costumes and crazy parents than to reserve and regret having it in your house later. Be Neighborly Had to buy a big bag but only get a couple of kids or have a lot left over?  Invest in after holiday sales and purchase some treat bags.  Make them up and stop by your neighbor’s house over the next couple of days or leave in the door with a note that says … “A little treat to make your day along The WAY.” Erase old Thoughts “But it’s Halloween” … “It’s only a bite size” … “I will ration my portions” … Sounding familiar?  Let’s get R.E.A.L. for a moment.  If you are reading this article, there is a reason.  If it hasn’t worked for you in the past as a voice to support success, stomp that voice out with new thoughts.  Plain and simple, you can go out to the store and buy that piece of candy ANYTIME.  Halloween does not make it special.  Heck!  Even Reese’s Peanut Butter Eggs are NO LONGER a special item at Easter!  Remind yourself, I can have that anytime I want to instead of making your brain think that if you don’t eat it now you will never get it again. Incorporate Movement If you aren’t a “treat goer”, rather a “treat giver” do you camp in a chair right inside the door that you are going to give candy out of?  Set your house up in a way that requires some movement to respond to those “trick or treat” requests.  Better yet if you have a garage and since you have to be home to give out candy, go out there and get something done.  Don’t be the person who decides to sit and wait to deliver candy.  Use this evening as a fun night for yourself.  Put on music, dance a little in between, sort an old box of pictures, eliminate the junk drawer.  Use this time to move and make some progress in your own goals as you await those creatures to come knocking at your door. Donate the Remains There are many organizations that have special occassions that can use your remains.  Be creative if you have children so that you can educate them on healthy choices and get them involved.  Maybe visit a local senior center in costume and hand them out or donate to a local reading hour at the library but volunteer to read the book that day.  It’s okay too if you don’t have the time.  After school programs, senior centers, senior living, homeless shelters, they could all use a little cheer along the way so spread it beyond your waistline.  The trick to this, IT MUST BE DONE IMMEDIATELY. Whatever you do DON’T TAKE IT TO THE OFFICE!  Your coworkers deserve to enter the year celebrating results too!   Parents of “Treat Goers”, you are setting your children’s course by the mindset that is placed today.  Halloween doesn’t have to be a time where we go into candy overload because quite frankly, candy can be bought anytime.  Consider instilling the attitude that you are collecting candy for a...

5 Steps to Fall into Success

5 Steps to Fall into Success

With fall settling in and summer fading fast, now is a great time to consider that dreaded month of January.  You know the one….tighter pants…extra pounds…guilt from holiday habits. Why not create a different path to success beginning today? Below I would like to share with you 5 Steps to Fall into Success Simply, not only for the month of January but for the journey of your life! Practice Awareness:  NOW is the time to begin to appreciate how you are affected by weather changes.  No one knows better than you for YOU have lived through many past fall experiences.  Good questions to ask yourself are … How is my mood affected by the weather change?  If you are uncertain about this, evaluate your most intimate relationships.  Is fall or darker weather a time for joy and celebration or does everyone in your house get quiet and sullen? How does my eating change?  Do you prefer soups in the fall weather, do you eat as many fresh vegetables, do you cook more or less come fall?  Take note, this is important. How does my activity level change?  Are you more interested in going to the gym as the weather changes or do you curl up on the couch and hibernate with snacking and sitcoms? Understand the “Why” behind the Awareness:  Maybe your choices are a result of a past experience.  Maybe you feel limited by a lack of things to do or the financial ability to do them.  This can be even deeper when it comes to your relationship with food choices.  It can be a “void” that you feel when social interaction is reduced by bad weather or when the sun hides behind the clouds more often than it shines.  In order for you to shine, these two steps are essential to develop a solid action plan.  If you are wondering “why” that is … let me give you some clarity….. If you get in your car with the intention of travelling to a destination but don’t know where you are to begin with, how do you expect to know the route you need to take to reach it?  Awareness and understanding the Why identifies the beginning. Create a Realistic Action Plan:  Now that you are aware and can somewhat appreciate the “why” of what you are doing, success will come with a realistic action plan.  Note, I said realistic.  Saying “I am not going to eat after 7pm” is not an action plan.   The action plan for this goal would be to first understand what it is that you are doing that initiates the desire to snack in the evening.  Are you sitting around?  Is this a lonely time of the day for you?  Did you eat enough throughout the day to remove the hunger of the evening?  Break it down. What is the ultimate desired goal/action?  Example:  Eliminate the desire to eat after 7p What steps will you put in to place to see it through?  Example:  Make plans to chat with a friend at that time What obstacles do you see externally and intrinsically that might arise?  Example:  Lack of follow through or purchasing snacks I like to keep in the house so that I can tell myself “no” but have them in case. What is your action plan for getting around those  Example:  Plan activities or tasks at that time to keep me busy.  Reduce the amount of snack choices I have in the house by creating a meal plan and sticking to it at the store How can you reduce the the temptation for yourself?  (See above) Where will the accountability come from?  Food journalling, goal pants, emotional journalling, buddy system Remove Judgement:  I simply have one question to ask you.  How long have these habits been in place and what type of expectation for change are you setting for yourself to change them?  Simply put, if you were a manager and had to train an individual who had no experience in doing something that you wanted them to be proficient in,...
